A chilly October morning. Detective Geldard is woken by a phone call. A woman’s body has been discovered at an archaeological dig near the pretty Norfolk village of Caistor St Edmund.

Geldard races to the scene. The body lies in a shallow trench, arms crossed, a silver coin resting in the mouth. But the dental work is modern. This is no ancient death.

Missing-persons searches throws up two earlier cases — one in Cambridgeshire, one in Suffolk — each body posed in the same macabre way.

And another woman vanishes.

Then Geldard’s ex-wife reaches out. She’s been receiving disturbing phone calls.

Geldard wants to help. But he can’t afford to be distracted.

He’s in a race against time to find the missing woman before she meets a grisly fate.
