Dawn of Shadows (The Dragon Rider Chronicles, #1)

Dawn of Shadows was previously published as Dawn Before The Dark.
In Slan, only men can use magic, and only women can ride the dragons. It’s been that way for centuries, since the curse of Ailin.

Then the strangest thing of all happens—an ancient dragon chooses Briant, a fearless young man as his rider. Briant could be the only one standing between all of Slan and the powerful mage who has waited centuries to claim her birthright.

Dawn of Shadows (formerly published as Dawn Before the Dark) is book 1 of an epic fantasy series featuring dragons and magic, found family, a reluctant chosen one, an ancient evil, and legions of reanimated corpses.
