Into Rhodesia: The Remarkable Story of the Pioneer Treks That Built a Country (The Gordon Wallis Africa Series)

Into RhodesiaBefore there was Rhodesia... there were the pioneers.

Long before roads, railways and towns appeared on the map, a handful of ordinary families loaded everything they owned onto ox wagons and headed into one of the most dangerous frontiers in Africa.

They crossed flooded rivers, hacked wagon roads through virgin forest, climbed seemingly impassable mountains and endured disease, lions, drought and isolation in search of a better life.

Many never returned.

Based on the remarkable accounts of the men and women who lived through these extraordinary journeys, Into Rhodesia brings to life the pioneer treks that opened Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands. From the epic Moodie Trek to the lesser-known expeditions that followed, this is the story of courage, hardship, determination and the birth of a community.

Written in a modern, engaging style, Gordon Wallis takes readers beyond the politics and arguments that so often dominate discussions about Rhodesia, returning instead to the people themselves. Their triumphs, tragedies, hopes and sacrifices reveal a history that is far more human, more complex and far more compelling than many realise.

Whether you have a personal connection to Rhodesia, an interest in African history, or simply enjoy true stories of exploration and endurance, Into Rhodesia is a fascinating journey into a forgotten chapter of southern African history.

Some stories deserve to be remembered.

These are among them.
