Christmas With An Unhinged Trucker

“I woke up to the sound of tires on the highway, Christmas music low on the radio, and cold metal on my wrist. My right arm was stretched up over my head, handcuffed to the rail on the side of his bunk, and when I pulled on it, the whole bed rattled and the cuff bit down harder. The curtain was cracked just enough for me to see the sun coming up over a road I didn't know, and Memphis was nowhere in it.”

Five years of being Sweets on the back row of the Love's, I done had men lie to me, cheat me, and put their hands on me, but every one of them let me out the truck when it was over. I could see him up front in the driver's seat, calm as Sunday morning, one hand on the wheel and that sawed-off laying across the passenger seat, humming along to "Silent Night" like he didn't have a woman cuffed to his bed behind him.
That's when it hit me that the thousand dollars wasn't for the night.
