उपरा [Upara]

जे जगलो, जे भोगलं, अनुभवलं, पाहिलं, ते-ते तसंच लिहित गेलो. पुन्हा एकदा तेच जगणं जगत गेलो. कुणावर दोषारोप ठेवावा हा हेतू कधीच नव्हता. अनेकदा मोह होऊनही स्वत:ला सावरत गेलो. काही ठिकाणी काही व्यक्तींची नावे बदलली ती नाइलाज म्हणूनच. या पलीकडे माझ्या पदरचं काही नाही.

या पुस्तकानं भटक्या विमुक्त जाती-जमातींच्या प्रश्नावर सामाजिक मंथन सुरू झालं, भटक्यांचे प्रश्न सामाजिक चर्चेचा विषय झाला आणि त्यांच्यासाठी काम करणार्‍या मंडळींच्या कामाला चालना मिळाली तर पुस्तक लिहिण्याचे श्रम सार्थकी लागले असे मी समजीन. पिढ्यान्पिढ्या बिर्‍हाड पाठीवर घेऊन गाढवाचं जिणं जगणार्‍या मंडळींच्या वेदना समाज समजावून घेऊ शकला तरी खुप झालं.

Upara (a Marathi language word meaning outsider) is an autobiography written by Laxman Mane, a writer who lives in the state of Maharashtra, India. It has been translated into English by A. K. Kamat and titled "Upara - An Outsider". Arjuna Dangale sees it as a remarkable example of a "Dalit" autobiography. It finds mention in Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature under the genre Autobiography (Marathi). According to Braj B. Kachru et al. it is a path breaking work in the domain of Marathi literature. The Cambridge Companion to Modern Indian Culture (2012) considers it to be a "landmark publication".
