Baik buku-buku waktu masa kemegahan Islam, atau buku-buku hikayat 1001 Malam yang terkenal dan masyhur itu. Teringatlah bahwasanya sejak zaman purbakala, tanah Iraq, iaitu hujung sebelah utara dari Jazirah Arab, di tepi sungai-sungai Dajlah dan Furat, adalah negeri yang telah melalui riwayat beribu-ribu tahun.

Di sanalah dahulu kalanya berdiri kerajaan Babylonia. Dan di negeri Babylonia itulah meninggal Iskandar Masedonia ketika dia hendak pulang kembali ke Yunani, sesudah menaklukkan tanah Parsi dan sebahagian dari tanah India. Iaitu 3 abad sebelum Al-Masih dilahirkan.

Buku ini merupakan kisah pengembaraan Buya Hamka ke Kota Baghdad, Iraq pada tahun 1950. Pernah diterbitkan kali pertama pada 1952 oleh penerbitan GAPURA N.V. Jakarta. Terbitan pertama 2018 oleh Jejak Tarbiah dengan izin hakcipta pewaris Hamka.
